Effect of histamine on water and electrolytes distribution in various tissues of rabbits

Abstract
The effects of histamine on water and electrolytes of various tissues were studied in rabbits. Sixteen rabbits were served as control and in sixteen rabbits histamine was administered intravenously. After ten minutes of histamine injection animals were sacrificed and various tissues were removed. Tissue water content, electrolytes in serum and tissues, together with the Na space and Cl space were measured in liver, spleen, stomach, small intestine, renal cortex, lung, cardiac muscle, diaphragm and skeletal muscle. The following results were obtained.
1. Histamine injection resulted in a remarkable increase in tissue water and it was attributed to the water escape from plasma caused by the increased capillary permeability.
2. Electrolyte distribution across the capillary wall changed by the leakage of plasma protein through the capillary wall, that was, the outward transport of sodium and chloride to the interstitial fluid phase.
3. The elevation of plasma potassium level was interpreted as to be accounted for the potassium loss of cells exceed to the plasma potassium loss.
4. Potassium content in all tissues but in the spleen were decreased. On the contrary, in the spleen potassium was significantly increased.
5. The osmotically active bases were decreased in intracellular phase as well as in totci tissue water and this is attributable to the loss of potassium from the tissue.
6. The difference of the concentration of the osmotically active bases between interstitial fluid and intracellular fluid was reduced by histamine administration.
7. Sodium space and chloride space were increased significantly in the histamine administered animals. 8. Electrolytes and water inbalance effecting edema in the tissues and hypovolemia caused by the histamine action were discussed.
